There was very little humanity to the character and it was difficult to relate to him, he was basically playing Robocop.
Urban brings more humanity into it, when innocent bystanders get caught in the mayhem he's sombre and vengeful.
He treats upholding the law more as a burden, he would rather issue a life sentence than gun a criminal down. Only when the odds are stacked against him and he has to defend himself against armed goons does he act violently.
Urban gets as much out this character as possible with half his face covered up. It's not just an improvement on Stallone's take on the character it's an expansion of the comic book character too.
The supporting cast are all excellent, and they all give great performances and have strong characters to work with. Olivia Thirlby as rookie judge Anderson deserves praise, playing a character with psychic powers is not easy, her approach on the role makes you believe everything her character can do.
She is not a weak female role either she is never once the damsel in distress and there is no attempt and sexualisation. Lena Headey as the villain Ma-Ma steals every scene she's in, a crazy blood crazed woman who almost seems to enjoy going toe-to-toe with someone as lethal as Judge Dredd.
She doesn't care who gets in the way she just loves the thrill of it all. An insane villain who is ready to just about pull anything is captivating and intense to watch, i really wish she had been in the film more.
The Megacity in this movie is not the Blade-Runner-Esque city seen in the film, it resembles a modern day overpopulated inner city slum.
This gritty realism is one of the films biggest strengths. Dredd himself is not a superhero, he gets shot and bleeds like everyone else this feeling of vulnerability makes it easier to relate to the character.
There's no Rob Schneider in this movie, oh no, no desperate comedy at all there's just no laughs to be had whatsoever.
This film is gritty to the extreme, people are seen being shot to ribbons, blown up, set alight, crushed, splattered, skinned, tortured etc etc etc.
Yet it never feel over exploitative, just the right amount. It's just how this stuff would happen in real life, once again coming back to the films visceral reality.
The film is not without its flaws, coming off the heels of The Raid a similar film in premise about law enforcers scaling a tower block to get someone at the top floor makes one draw comparisons watching it.
The Raid had amazing martial arts to make up for its slower parts and was consistently upping itself while being as gritty as it could be.
Dredd doesn't have anywhere near the impressive stunts featured in The Raid and it makes you wish you had seen The Raid after you saw this, because you keep thinking to yourself: "this scene was done better in The Raid".
The slow-motion sections showcasing the effects of the "Slow-Mo Drug" are a little overused, the colour is over-saturated and these are the only times in the film where the 3D is used to a noticeable degree.
Overall it's a far superior Judge Dredd film to the one that came before it, and has enough action and doesn't over-complicate itself to the point where people aren't bored watching it.
It takes a comic book that has been tagged as notoriously impossible to adapt, give it a gritty and realistic setting and cast some great actors to give the movie some life.
I hope there is a sequel because it would be really great to see more of this version of Dredd, Urban has a better grip on what the character should be and i can see him taking it a long way.

Judge Dredd Action Crime Sci-Fi. Hewitt also called Thirlby's Anderson engaging and wrote that the film is "a solid, occasionally excellent take on [Judge Dredd], with Urban's chin particularly impressive.
Entertainment Weekly ' s Darren Franich said that the film is a "darkly funny blood-soaked romp" and singled out Urban for his "credibly wry performance using little more than his gravelly, imitation- [Clint] Eastwood voice—and his chin.
He also wrote, "In a world of compromised adaptations, Dredd is something of a triumph. Sneddon described Anderson as repeatedly shown to have power over men who underestimate her, while Ma-Ma displays more intelligence and sadism than any of her male gang members, and neither woman interacts with the other on the basis of their gender.
Dalton also said that Urban's performance, while close to the comic, lacked something. Overall Dalton said, "[p]itched at the right level to please original fans, but still slick and accessible enough to attract new ones, [Dredd] feels like a smart and muscular addition to the sci-fi action genre.
Many US newspaper critics were less taken with the film. Mark Olsen of the Los Angeles Times called it "a clunk-headed action picture" that "simply becomes a monotonous series of bad-guy confrontations.
He also wrote, "It's not that the movie is in bad taste or cheesy though it is but that all of its hyper-violence adds up to nothing".
The visual effects and slow-motion sequences induced by Slo-Mo received broad praise. Berkshire said that they are notable and eye-catching with "impressively utilised 3D.
The film's use of 3D is often excellent including the credits and it really comes to life in the Slo-mo scenes". Judge Dredd creator John Wagner, who had been critical of the adaptation, gave a positive review of Dredd.
He said: "I liked the movie. It was, unlike the first film, a true representation of Judge Dredd Karl Urban was a fine Dredd and I'd be more than happy to see him in the follow-up.
Olivia Thirlby excelled as Anderson The character and storyline are pure Dredd. It was also the best-selling digital download for that period.
In March , executive producer Adi Shankar said that a sequel was unlikely. In July , AD endorsed the fan petition, supporting the campaign by printing advertisements in their publications, and by September it had attracted over 80, signatures.
In , Urban said that "conversations are happening" regarding a Dredd continuation on streaming services Netflix or Amazon Prime.

I think you should apologize. I deserve it. Now apologize! Judge Dredd: Who is she? Judge Fargo: Justice, before your time.
We should have never taken it from her hands. Fergie Herman Ferguson: And these, these refugees, they made it through, right?
Judge Dredd: Actually, they were roasted. Fergie Herman Ferguson: Really? Then how do you explain what happened to you?
What a clever reward from Fargo, huh? When the time comes for me to take it off, please let me do so knowing that it still stands for freedom… and not for repression.
The evidence has been falsified. I never broke the law! I am the Law! They were the Judges. Think about it.
How much suffering do we have the right to inflict? Death the avenger. Purger of sins. Death the merciful. Purifier of souls.
Those who considered me gone, think again. Those who laughed and mocked me, be afraid. For I am returned, and this time Judgment will not be denied.
I am coming for you. Put down your weapons and prepare to be judged. Block Warlord: Judge this! Rico: It ends. But I had to, they were killing each other in there!
Judge Dredd: You could have gone out the window. Herman Ferguson: 40 floors? It would of been suicide!
Judge Hershey: Waiting for backup. Herman Ferguson: Not guilty? Judge Dredd: Who is she, sir?
Chief Justice Fargo: Justice before your time. We should never have taken justice out of her hands. Judge Dredd: We put order to chaos, sir.
Chief Justice Fargo: Yes, we solved many problems, but created many more. Rico: Rico. Cursed Earth pirates, murderers, scavengers, and of course scumbags!
Their effective lethal range is meters. So what are you doing down there Judge Hershey? Keep it simple. Single file, standard relay.
Code , possession of illegal assault weapons, 5 years. Code , resisting arrest, 20 years! And Code , the first degree murder of a Street Judge… Citizen: [pulling a gun from behind his belt] Let me guess, life.
Judge Dredd: [turns around and shoots] Death. Judge Dredd: Mmmhmm. An automatic five year sentence. How do you plead?
Ferguson: Five years?! I had no choice! They were killing each other in there. Ferguson: Forty floors? It would have been suicide! Anderson then performs a powerful, most likely fatal roundhouse kick to his temple, rendering him either dead or unconscious as a result.
Anderson quickly escapes and leaves Kay to bleed out, before encountering Judge Kaplan, whom she promptly shoots dead after reading her mind and discovering her objective was to kill her.
Elsewhere, Dredd kills Alvarez by firing a Hi-Ex high explosive round into his head, which immediately detonates. Dredd realises this was his last round, so he remains in cover behind a brick separator wall.
Lex then fires several armour piercing bullets through the wall, one of them passing through Dredd's abdomen. Lex moves in to execute Dredd, but Dredd manages to stall him long enough for Anderson to get a clear shot on him from behind, killing him instantly.
Anderson and Dredd obtain the code to Ma-Ma's Penthouse from her personal hacker. They use this to get through the security door and confront her for the first time.
Ma-Ma tells Dredd that in the case of her death, a device on her wrist will detonate explosives on the top floors, crushing the rest of the building and killing everyone.
Dredd reasons that the detonator's signal will be too weak to reach the explosives from the ground floor and so he forces Ma-Ma to inhale Slo-Mo and throws her down the atrium.
She falls hundreds of metres before face planting the cement pavement below, killing her instantly and deactivating the device on her wrist.
Dredd and Anderson, both shot, leave down the elevator to the front entrance. In the aftermath, as the two judges exit the compound, Anderson accepts that she failed her evaluation by previouslly becoming forcfully disarmed whilst being held captive, and walks away, giving her badge to Dredd.
The Chief Judge then asks Dredd about Anderson's performance; he responds that she was a pass. At the end of the movie however, we see Anderson walking out of the Judge headquarters, holding her gear and riding off in a motorcycle, showing that she is still a Judge.
There were three treatments that Alex Garland wrote before settling for the present story. The first treatment involved the Dark Judges and was about the encounter between Dredd and a rival judge by the name of Judge Death.
However, Garland abandoned it after a year's work and 16 drafts on the story admitting that he couldn't crack much on that storyline and feeling it would be a bit much for audiences to be introduced to the world of Judge Dredd.
The second treatment is related to the Dredd and Cursed Earth storyline based on the Origins comic strip but was abandoned for the similar reason, as Garland liked the idea but felt that it would serve better as a sequel.
The third treatment was an adaptation of the pro-democracy terrorists attacking the judges storyline but Garland felt that story and his ideas towards it were too grandiose in nature but stated that treatment would also have been a sequel, the third part of a trilogy, if there would be one.
The final script that he wrote was based one of the punchier short stories in the vein of cop movies such as Die Hard or Training Day. John Wagner described the script as correcting the mistake in the Stallone-starred version that was being too sweeping.
The movie was filmed entirely in South Africa in 3D with stunning slow motion photography sequences, the film returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra's revered comic strip.
The filmmakers decided that Dredd should appear lean and fast like a boxer rather than bulky like "someone who spends hours sort of steroiding himself up.
Dredd is out there on the frontline so he needed protection. Urban said: "He is supposed to be the faceless representative of the law and I think that is part of his enigma You wouldn't get to the end of a Sergio Leone Western and go, 'God, I didn't even know the character's name!
Dredd's signature weapon, the "Lawgiver" was developed as a fully operational weapon based on a suppressed 9mm Glock 17 firing system, capable of firing ammunition and being changed from automatic to semi-auto fire.
Internal magazine changes were also incorporated into the design. His motorcycle "Lawmaster" was a modified cc motorcycle.
A large fairing was added over the motorcycle with machine guns, an extended wheel base and the largest functional tyres possible. The vehicle was also operational and Urban insisted on riding it himself rather than relying on Chroma key visual effects.
Wagner described the necessity of adaptation from the source material and said that the film's attempt to directly replicate the comic's motorcycle was unable to steer because the tyres were too large.
